It was not until 1626 that Peter Minuit bought the island “Manna-hatta” for goods worth 60 gulden from the locals, probably Lenni Lenape Indians. The settlement thus founded was then named Nieuw Amsterdam and was initially the capital of the colony Nieuw Nederland, until it was conquered by the British in 1664 and the city got the valid name since then. Their rise to the cosmopolitan city began in 1825 with the completion of the Eriekanals.
